About the Area Immediately around Mermaid’s Tale
Mermaid’s Tale is located about 40 miles south of Tallahassee in Alligator Point, Fla. Alligator Point is an eight-mile-long spit of land that runs east to west in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida, just south of Ochlockonee Bay.
The area, which includes Bald Point State Park, is very sparsely populated and wild . . . much of the surrounding area is saw grass marsh. This part of the Gulf of Mexico is called the “nursery of the sea world,” so this “accidental paradise” is all the more striking for its pristine sugar-white sand beaches and waters filled with fish, seafood, and dolphins.
A major joy of the area is its sense of isolation and timelessness—you’ll feel its unspoiled beauty as you walk for hours on a beach and never see another living person . . . as you follow a sand bar out into the gulf for a quarter of a mile with just the company of a few sea birds . . . and as you end each day with a Maxfield Parrish sky, blinding you to ordinary colors forever.
